The SEC is Clearly Superior

North Korea or West Virginia? No electricity? Eers have football but they don't have electricity Sports Illustrated recently ended the debate over which Conference is the best. Below is a scan from the article that ended the argument. Liars figure and figures lie.
SEC fans aren't concerned with the BCS Title. We know that there is very little chance of one of our teams making it through an SEC schedule undefeated. It's just not going to happen. Florida beats LSU at home and then it's on to Auburn. No rest for the wicked, indeed. West Virginia or Lousiville in the SEC? 3-4 loss teams at best. Notre Dame in the SEC? no better than 2nd or 3rd in the SEC East. Southern Cal in the SEC? already a one loss team. National pundits hate these statements, but facts are facts. Nobody goes through the SEC undefeated. And if they manage (Auburn 2004) they should automatically win the National Championship by default. The fact that Auburn was not allowed to compete for the National Title in 2004 forever ruined the BCS in the eyes of SEC fans. Examine who Auburn had to beat in 2004 to go undefeated. LSU, Tennessee (twice), BAMA, Arkansas, Georgia, etc. Moving back to the present, let's take a look at Cal. The Golden Bears are running roughshod through the Pac-10. They look like a BCS team right now. Put them in the middle of an SEC Stadium facing an SEC defense and all of a sudden those Heisman Trophy candidates look like Division I-AA second teamers. Tennessee literally dismantled Cal bit by bit. Tedford and Longshore both admitted that the crowd stunned them from the minute they took the field. Well, here is a not-so-well kept secret......it's like that every weekend, everywhere you go in the SEC (except Vandy, KY, or MSU). Cal has a very good shot at beating Southern Cal. If that happens, does Tennessee get an honorary Pac-10 Championship? Ohio State is riding high right now after a win over a Texas team that in all honesty lacks the weapons of last year's team. That's not the Buckeye's fault, but too much credibility is weghted on that game. I happen to respect Big-10 football. But the fact is the last three times my Vols have played the Big-10, we have walked away winners. We gave Michigan the worst beatdown in many decades, upset the NFL-loaded Buckeye's in the Citrus Bowl, and easily put Northwestern away. Ohio State has two games on their schedule that are potential stumbling blocks. Texas and Michigan. Compare that to a Tennessee schedule (Cal, Florida, Georgia, BAMA, LSU, Arkansas) or to a Florida schedule (Tennessee, BAMA, Georgia, LSU, Auburn, Florida State) and you will see that there is no comparison at all. It's easy to win when you don't play your best when you face Bowling Green, but try going to Fayettville when you have an off-game (see Auburn last week). I happen to think that Ohio State is a supremely talented team, possibly the most talented in the country. But that's not the point. The point is that teams in the SEC face the near-impossible task of playing their best every single Saturday. Because the middle teams in this conference are capable of beating any team in the country on any Saturday. The same can't be said for other conferences. SEC Champions will almost always have a loss or two, and because of that a team like Louisville or West Virginia will rank higher in the final BCS Standings. SEC fans already know the BCS is a joke. Our National Championship is played in Atlanta on the first Saturday of December.

Sweet WVU is last years Nat'l Champs. They Beat The SEC champ in the BCS in a de facto home game for Georgia in the Georgia Dome. Can't wait to hear all the "They weren't ready" or "They were flat" crap excuses that dribble out of the mouths of those who can't fathom nor stomach that a team from the The Big East can actually play football.

Anonymous said...

If that is in fact the case, then last year's "national champion" was emberrassed in what was virtually a home game for them by a Big East team.

Lloyd Braun said...

You guys have a good point. You beat Georgia soundly and that is never a bad thing. My point though is that Non-SEC teams can win the battles, but they could not win the war in the SEC.

Anonymous said...

You are an idiot...I agree that it will be tough to go through the SEC undefeated, but to say point blank that another team would be lesser just because...well...is idiotic...I would love for you guys to invite my Mountaineers into the SEC(we seem to run on your best defenses ay will). I am dissappointed in Auburn not making the BCS title game in '04. anyway...all mighty one...YES UT blew out Cal...does that mean they played the same as they did after that? does that mean you all would win that game (when you all were still thinking you would be better, but not knowing it) in Cali or a neutral site? I think things would be different from week to week...depending where games are played and what the players mindset is going into the game.
That being said...I hope to play UT or any other SEC team in another BCS game to see where they stand...hopefully in the title game.

The BCS isn't going anywhere. If SEC teams have a problem with playing such a hard schedule, feel free to join the Big East, and have a much easier schedule to the National Championship. You aren't special enough to change all of the rules for.

LL Card said...

The first problem with your statement is...

National pundits hate these statements, but facts are facts.

There is no factual basis for your statements.. Unless there is some serioud inter conference play, who knows. The only time this is known, "who is better, SEC, Big Ten, Big East...." is when they play and the only play in the bowls and more specifically the BCS Bowl.

What is truly factual, is that West Virginia, the best of the Big East in 2005 beat Georgia, the best of the SEC in the Georgia Dome..

This is truly a fact.

I have what he is having. The SEC is one of the top conference in the country. Are they the best, not this year. Did you forget who is first in the SEC west. A team that got thumped at home this year by USC. Year in and year out the SEC plays one of the worst OCC in the nation. As WVU proofed last year the SEC defenses are not as good as the rest of the country's offenses. I went to the UC UGA game this year. WVU and UL are 21 points better than them. I just do not buy what your selling. Who other than UT has won a meaningful game out of conference? I sure wish we played Auburn this year rather than in 2008, then WVU would be ranked #2 with Slaton and company running 300+ yds on Auburn.

Knute Rocks Me said...

Do they have high speed internet in 3rd world places like Honduras and West Virgina?

Anonymous said...

Yeah, those SEC defenses are so stingy. What was the point total in the Georgia-UT game? And Arkansas could hardly score against anyone until they played at Auburn. And wasn't that the same team that gave up over 50 to a "not as good" USC team? And how about the Miss St team that was suppoed to be good against the run. West Virginia hardly had a problem running at will, even wtih all of the stupid cowbells ringing away. Auburn or LSU couldn't do that.

The SEC is the best overall league, top to bottom. I don't think there is any doubt about that. But there are teams out there that can beat an SEC team. Face it, other conferences can compete. I'm not sure how you think that a WVU or Louisville team would automatically have 4 or 5 losses in the SEC. You don't know. I would say that they could be pretty darn good considering WVU beating the SEC champ last year. I fyou have a conference championship, then that winner gets whooped by an bad team, what does that say about the rest of the league?

Lloyd Braun said...

I said 3-4 losses, not 4-5. I said exactly what you said. Other teams can beat SEC teams but the SEC is the best conference.

I am glad we agree. I wish we could trade Vandy for WVU.

Suri Cruise said...

Hey: Ole Miss sucks worse than those guys. Remember, Orgeron recruits players who can't read?

Watch what happens to Florida this weekend. Then come back and preach about their greatness.

There is not a team in the SEC that could stop West Virginia's rushing attack.

Listen here EERs, Florida has a dopesmoking DT that can't be stopped. If he gets the munchies, all bets are off.

Wanna see if slaton can run from him with a bag of doritos?

The Eers got lucky. We were flat. 9 times out of 10 we win that game.

Knute Rocks Me said...

Does UPS or FED-EX deliver to West Virgina?

irishjihad said...

Sad to see that so many people have misconstrued what Lloyd is saying. West Virginia is a very good team and can play with the big boys(although not historically) as they, to quote an 'Eer, 'proofed' in the Sugar Bowl. What Lloyd is saying is that week in and week out you've got to bring your A-game in the SEC or you're gonna get your ass kicked. West Virginia only has to nut up once, maybe twice, all year. The rest of the games they can sleep walk through. Not one team in the SEC has gone undefeated since '98. Do you people think this West Virginia team is better than any of the teams in the SEC over the past 8 years? BTW, Georgia had 2 losses in the SEC last year. It's not like you cost them the MNC or anything.

Let me say this again, IJ thinks WV is a very good football team.

Lloyd Braun said...

Let me echo our resident Jihadists comments. We at LWS think the Eers are very talented and a team that very few would want to face. But like he said, we beat up on each other all year round. You guys have one or two games scheduled that you look at as big games.

Anonymous said...

wow you ND fans sure sound like the idiots with posts like "do they even have high speed internet" why dont you talk about football instead of trying to put our state down, maybe you should grow up

Big Papi said...

IJ, I know you've tried to block it out but Auburn went undefeated in 2004.

Anonymous said...

I agree that the SEC beats each other up is definitely true and the SEC is far superiour to any conference IMHO, but to say WVU would lose 3-4 in the SEC is plain wrong. There is no way of knowing that, I was at the WVU-Miss State game and believe me they can play with any team in the SEC (if not win). I was very impressed with their overall team speed and skilled positioned players. That game was no way as close as the final score we werent even in the game and if it weren't for some bonehead late hits we would not have even scored.

irishjihad said...

BP, what are you talking about? Auburn undefeated in '04. Oh man...good one.

Knute probably does rock you, creampuff. 3-4 really good teams in SEC yearly. also 3to4 crappy teams also. All WV can do is play their schedule as it is. They could do nothing whne the ACCX came in and raped the conference. Losing Va Tech, Miami and BC was huge. ALthough the ACC has seemed to have fallen on their face this year. PLaying in the Big East does not make WV a mediocre team. They are very very good. Ask Georgia. And whomever was the Bulldog that said you would win that game more than not, you didn't. Now sit and shut up. Could West Va beat Fla, LSU or Auburn?? I would love to see. There was a rumor a few years ago that WV was headed to the SEC in place of Vandy. Wouldn;t that have been fun. WV is 2-0 against SEC in two years. That is a fact. ALso the Big East was 5-0 in the Music CIty Bowl too...

Anonymous said...

If WV is the SEC champion because they barely beat Georgia, what’s the make Florida? We beat Georgia and we demolished the ACC Champion, FSU, and we didn’t even play in the SEC Championship game. The SEC is bare none the best conference, week-in and week-out. Yes, WV, USC, Michigan, OSU are ranked high, that’s because they don’t play the moster schedule we do, and they don’t even have a Conf Champ game. Give me a break. Remember Miami and FSU in their glory days? Yes, they had great teams, but they also played in joke conferences with no conf champ game. All they had to do was win one big game to get to the title game. This is the same exact scenario as WV and USC. …and if Louisville is your big game, you suck.

"we demolished the ACC Champion, FSU"

ACC? Might as well brag about a win over a MAC team this year.

"we didn’t even play in the SEC Championship game."

Because you weren't the best team, obviously.

"The SEC is bare none the best conference, week-in and week-out."

I agree top to bottom, but their top teams are over rated.

"blah blah blah"

You lose this weekend against Monster Auburn.

"and if Louisville is your big game, you suck."

Louisville would hang 60+ points on Florida, I'd love to see that blowout.

Okay, I'll make it easy for you, Lloyd....

Ask the mighty Air Force Academy how great your Vols are.

Ask a VERY BAD Colorado team how great Georgia is.

Ask your Vols, who were almost beaten by the Mighty Air Force LOL Academy IN Knoxville how great Florida is.

Better yet, ask Kentucky, who held Florida to 26 points in GAINSVILLE, how great Louisville REALLY as after hanging 59 on the hapless Wildcats.

The SEC is living off of their "traditional power" name alone and the little guys, LOUISVILLE, WVU are passing you guys up.

Don't worry the media, as well as the rest of the nation will catch on soon enough.

Have a nice day.

"Congrats, UGA without DJ Shockley is not UGA with DJ Shockley."

...Yeah, because DJ Shockley would have single-handedly prevented the 382 yards of rushing the UGA defense gave up. I mean, Slaton would have be stoned cold by that run-stuffing beast. Absolutely brilliant arguments from a brilliant conference. By the way, enjoy another national championship game missing an SEC team!! I think instead of complaining about the system, your coaches need to start writing bigger checks to their recruits!! Have you seen the price of shoes now-a-days? Phil Fulmer needs to get the big bucks out to satisfy these kids. I think that's been the problem for the SEC lately...underestimating how much money they need to pay players to keep them happy. Pay the money and the NC's will be rolling in again in the $EC.

1.) After 2 down years (re: ACC raid)the Big East is MUCH better this year top to bottom, and still has relatively young, improving teams (next few years will be even better.) Have you looked at the BE OOC record? It's right there in the SI article.

2.) WVU, UL, Rutgers, Pitt, (combined 20-1) etc. strength of schedules is improving by the week and will continue as they start playing each other (product of all those BE OOC wins.) These teams have tough schedules (partly) because they play each other and in a tough (this year) conference.

3.) I still think the SEC is the best conference overall, but its bottom 4 are extremely weak, and its not as tough at the top as most of its fans would like to believe. I attended the Ole Miss/GA game two weeks ago, and a VERY bad Ole Miss team came extremely close to beating a then-undefeated UGA.

4.) When is the last time a SEC team has beaten a Big East team? I can't remember. Anyone?

5.) ND has EVERY advantage possible, but still can't get it done (think New York Yankees.)

6.) Anyone putting down the state of West Virginia (I'm not from there or specifically a WVU fan), is extremely ignorant. Its a very nice place, and no less country than GA, Miss, AR, SC, AL, etc.

My $.02.
